Downtown Dive Bars

A good spot to knock back a couple or four in Denver, Herb's Hideout is nestled among the trendy bars and pretty people in the LoDo area of downtown. Dimly lit with classic checkerboard floors, Herb's is a classic dive bar that has some of the best people watching in LoDo. Stuff Magazine recently voted Herb's as one of the best ordinary places in America to see gorgeous women. Try the Moscow Mule - a nice concoction of vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. 2057 Larimer Street. 303.299.955.

ElchapultNo Dancing - It's what the sign says above the door at El Chapultapec in Lodo. This is one bar in Denver where all the white men will get to give the overbite a break for the evening. El Chapultapec is the anchor for Denver's jazz scene. It's a dive bar/jazz joint/paper plate mexican food/ high school cafeteria lookin' kinda place at the corner of 20th and Market in LoDo. There is usually a one drink minimum per set and this is one place where a mixed drink is rock solid for your money.  We're not really saying go and check this place out for the jazz, but just check it out cuz it's a Denver landmark and great place to grab a drink. Dive bar, no website. 20th & Market St. 303.295.9126

2008 Convention Housing Available...Sorta

Good article in the Rocky Mountain News about a Denver-based event company that has some rooms available for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. You be the judge.

Event firm hopes to cash in on DNC

Hmmmmm...

Blog Action Day - The Environment

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

October 15th is Blog Action Day. On October 15th, bloggers around the web are uniting to put a single important issue on everyone's mind- the environment.  Bloggers will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic.  The aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.

Our Thoughts: What better way to be green than to catch a bus (Denver RTD) to Boulder and spend the day in the People's Republic. You can pick up the Boulder bus at the transit station at the north end of the 16th Street Mall and it will drop you off next to the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. Once on the pedestrian-friendly mall, democrats can feel free to hug some trees, join a drum circle or two, breathe in the smell of fresh patchouli, or hit an outdoor cafe for a beer or some green tea. Give yourself about 5 hours to do it.  Peace out.

One Of The Last Great Indie Bookstores

LodotcDon't miss the Tattered Cover Bookstore in LoDo - one of the truly great independent bookstores left in America. With two stories of reading, wood floors, antique decor, and a coffee shop to boot, The Tattered Cover is a "can't miss" when you're in Denver. The Tattered Cover also has a political history as a defender of the First Amendment. A five minute walk from the Pepsi Center, the Tattered Cover is a great place to grab a book and unwind after a day at the show or to grab a cup of coffee in the morning. Free Wi-fi. Open Monday through Thursday 6:30 am to 9 pm; Friday 6:30 am to 11 pm; Saturday 9 am to 11 pm; and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm.  303.436.1070.

While you are right there, make sure to visit Wines Off Wynkoop.  This great little shop sits in the alley just between Dixon's and The Tattered Cover. It has a great selection of liquor, vino, and beer and is one of the only respectable places in the downtown area where you can grab a bottle for your hotel room. 1610 16th Street (in the alley). 303.571.1012.

Things to Bring to Denver When You're Dem

Known as the Mile High City, Denver sits at an elevation 5280 feet above sea level. For most convention-goers, this will be about 5279 feet higher than you are used to. While most cases of altitude sickness will occur at 8000 feet above sea level, you will more than likely notice the difference in our "thin air" climate. Watch for headaches, a bit of nausea or unusual fatigue. As seasoned Coloradoans, we will convey some pearls of wisdom that we have acquired through our years of living in this beautiful state.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: We don't think you should wear a Camelbak to the show but make sure that you keep the tank topped off during the day.  Our dry air is wonderful, but you will also lose a lot more water than you realize when you are in Denver.  Take it easy on the alcohol, caffeine, and salty foods for a day or so while your body adjusts to the altitude. Juices, water, and non-caffeinated beverages are all great ways to stay hydrated. Recycle those plastic bottles, too!

Lip Balm and Lotion: Bring some lip balm and some good moisturizer. You will notice the effects of the dry air pretty quickly. Better safe than sorry.

Sunscreen: If you are going to engage the great outdoors while in Denver, bring some SPF 30. It is much easier to get sunburned at altitude as there is less of our already troubled atmosphere to block the sun. They say that UV exposure increases by 4% every 1,000 feet you gain in elevation.

Clothing: Bring a wide-brimmed hat and some decent hiking/walking shoes if you plan on hiking or just walking around the 16th Street Mall or going to the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. If you plan on heading up to the mountains, bring a light windbreaker as the temps can drop into the 40's and 50's at night up in ski country.

The 16th Street Mall

16th_street_mallThe 16th Street Mall is a pedestrian area located in the heart of downtown Denver. You'll find tons of shopping, dining and entertainment along the 16 block stretch of downtown as well as a free shuttle system that currently carries 60,000 riders a day. The mall is about 4 blocks from the Pepsi Center and, by taking advantage of the shuttle, you are just blocks away from many great Denver attractions including:  Coors Field, The State Capitol, and The Denver Center for Performing Arts.

Free Shuttle: The 16th Street MallRide is a free service that runs from one end of the mall to the other. It's definitely the easiet and most convenient way to travel around downtown. There are stops at every intersection on the Mall. You can catch the shuttle at any intersection along the mall and it runs from 5 AM to 1:30 AM every day.

HOT SPOT: There is free Wi-Fi anywhere along the Mall available.

Gettin Yer Drink On

Denver does have some great bars - old man bars, raw bars, dive bars, outdoor bars, pubs, even schwanky tini bars. We'll be updating the Watering Holes section frequently, but wanted to start giving convention goers a looksie at some of our favorite spots in the LoDo/downtown area.

Tucked into a nice little spot around 19th and Blake, The Falling Rock Tap House boasts a selection of 75 draft beers, is a great spot to knock back one or six tap beers. A nice sized, classic watering hole, The Falling Rock has a couple of pool tables, darts, and a couple of couches. They have a constantly updating webcam if you really want to check it out on their website. 1919 Blake Street.          303.293.8338

A good basic drinking spot can be found at Nallen's Irish Pub on Market Street in LODO. This spot can get quite crowded but is just a short walk from the convention center and on your way back to your hotel. No food, but you can order a pizza from Old Chicago next door and eat it there. 1429 Market Street (middle of the block between 14th and 15th on Market).          303.572.0667

My Brothers Bar is another great old school Denver bar located a very short distance from the Pepsi Center. It's the oldest bar in Denver still serving booze on its original site. It's got a nice, shady patio around back and a Beat history (supposedly a Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac hangout). They serve food til late, but i can't really remember what time the kitchen closes. Seems like the best drinkin' spots still dont have websites, and this one is no different. Corner of 15th and Platte (no sign on the place, 5 minute walk NW along 15th out of downtown)          303.455.9991
